Wayfinding, Banners & Streetscape
As the Ballston BID continues to deploy the Ballston brand of creativity and innovation to the streets of our 5-block neighborhood in addition to the redevelopment of Ballston Quater, we are beginning to pursue a signature element to for our digital main street Wilson Blvd- a custom, patented digital banner.
These banners will be one of a kind and exclusive to Ballston- truly innovative in nature. While there are many examples of digital signage, nothing currently exists like the “Digital Banner” we are designing to replace the functionality and placemaking element of a fabric banner- and then we take it to the next level. These digital banners will have a round, dual-sided LED screen that can be programmed to function and change like a traditional banner-giving the streetscape a character and personality as well as being used to convey info about special programs and events. On demand, these banners can become a powerful asset whereby Arlington County will be given access to them to send messages to the public in case of an emergency. And finally, we plan to use these as public art- making Wilson Boulevard and canvas for art on the 59th minute of each hour.
For the rest of our BID’s streets, we will continue our work to set Ballston apart and state clearly that you are in a neighborhood on discovery and innovation. We created one of a kind acrylic disc banners with an aluminum casing that houses an LED light. These discs can be changed out just as easily as a common fabric banner, are flexible, durable and reusable, and are fade and weather resistant.
The Ballston BID has released a suite of streetscape furniture to match the Ballston brand. These include benches, bike racks and trash/recycling receptacles. The suite holds a conteporary style and a cohesive look. The BID is working with property owners and managers in the district to implemement these furnitionings. If you are a property manager and are interested in ordering streetscape furniture- please contact us.
With a sleek new gateway sign designed and fabricated the Ballston BID has identified four gateway locations within the Ballston boundary where they will be installed. These signs will create a sense of arrival when coming to the neighborhood in addition to enhancing our overall wayfinding features.
