Each year since 2012 a portion of Taste of Arlington event proceeds are donated to the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC), a community-based non-profit that provides supplemental groceries to Arlingtonians in need. In the four years since the Ballston BID partnered with AFAC, the BID has made a cumulative contribution of over $60,000.
AFAC is currently serving 2,200 families each week. Each family is given healthy proteins, fresh produce, milk, eggs, and a variety of shelf stable staples. 40% of the food AFAC distributes is donated and the rest is purchased through their funds. AFAC has 1,600 active volunteers that devote their spare time to food distribution for clients, working in our warehouse bagging produce and sorting through donated food, gleaning, and representing AFAC a variety of events around the County. And, 90% of AFAC's funding comes from private sources.
